Borrowing from the Chinese
As minority Indians living in Singapore which comprise more than 70% ethnic Chinese, the Indians have borrowed and enriched their own practices by looking at the Chinese traditions. The Chinese are famous for their Ang Pow packets - red packets where they put money and give as a gift to their children during Chinese New Year. The Indians never did this. They mainly gave beautiful saris and jewelry to their kids on Deepavali. But now many of the Indian parents have also started giving money in little packets to their kids. Ang Pow Indian style. Shops now sell little envelops just like the Ang Pows. Not sure if this is an erosion of culture or enrichment. I like the more personalized gift giving - choosing gems that raise your vibration and choosing sari colors and motifs that suit the individual's personality. But money seems more practical and less time consuming.
